Door handles can sometimes fade into the background even though we use them on a regular basis. Think about all the times you walk in and out of a room and you use the door handle but because we do it so often its almost like autopilot and we dont really look at the handles we are using. The second facet of the design of door handles is that they should be simple in design both in shape and size so that they are do not protrude and catch people as they pass by. The shape should be such that it is easy to operate, in most kitchens they work by a straight pull with the door being held in position by a magnetic door catch and the design should reflect this. The pattern should not include grooves or crevices where dirt can collect and cause problems.
Doors throughout history have also changed regarding functionality. For instance, we still find doors of all types, those that roll, slide, swing, and fold. Of course, for doors to function, hardware is required to include door handles. Just as with doors, handles have a long history although these were first manufactured during the mid-19th century in America. The first handle was shaped like an egg and today, they are still found in many homes, especially older homes. Interestingly, because of the way this type of door handle is grasped, it has proved to be the easiest to open.
The fridge and freezer are the major culprits because these are the most commonly used appliances but the other cupboards are also a prime contenders. The use of door handles to open the cupboard doors are the prime region of contact where and whilst some materials are better than others for retaining germs, all of the handles do it to some degree. Therefore it is worth using a door handle that is easily cleaned on a regular basis so that any germs are disinfected quickly and precisely.
